The Puzzling Case of Nick Diaz

The talk of the (MMA) town this week has been about Nick Diaz, his disappearing act, and the consequences that followed.

It was like playing a game of “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?”

As a result of not showing up for press conferences, he was removed from the title fight against French Canadian Fleur de Lis fanatic, George St. Pierre during UFC 137, taking place October 29th. Charles Condit was then pulled from his match with BJ Penn on the same card to face St. Pierre, and then when Diaz finally made an appearance, he was placed back on the card to face Penn.

I think the UFC has turned into one of the few jobs on the planet now where you can not show up, not perform the job you were hired to do, and still get paid. Dana White has mentioned before that you have to screw up pretty badly to get kicked out of the UFC, but this is kind of ridiculous.

Everyone does things at their jobs that they don’t want to do, because that’s what the job description entails. You get through the sucky parts to get to the good parts. If Diaz has social anxiety issues, fine: we all know you smoke up dude, come in high and coast through the interview. Or, use some of that health insurance we know the UFC gave you and go on medication to deal with it. There is better living though chemistry and it benefits thousands, if not millions every single day.

Today, you get two for one!

It was just announced yesterday, I believe, that Alistair Overeem and Brock Lesnar are scheduled to fight on Dec 30th.

The Dutch fighter Overeem was recently cut from Strikeforce and has been picked up by UFC.

Lesnar seems to have recovered enough from his diverticulitis to compete at the end of this year: good for him!

Brandon Vera  just became a little more near and dear to my heart. Why?

Because he’s a comic book nerd!

Brandon and his lady went to the San Diego Comic Convention, the mecca of comic book fans, and took a whole bunch of photos. He then posted said photos onto Google Plus, stating,

“Most people only know me as a fighter. So… to introduce y’all to the other side of my/our lives, here’s the whole album from Comic Con 2011!!! Had a great time Nerdin’ out! Have a great day and leave some comments! Sand Castles the next day will be up tomorrow.”

I love it.

Check this site out, which was referred by someone on the Twitter:

Shawn Tamaribuchi’s Female Fighter Project. I’m sorry, I don’t have that much time to write today, but at a quick glance, the photos are well done and look interesting.

Check it out!

I noticed on “The Twitter” today that George St. Pierre mentioned he was getting his suit in preparation of his fight this Saturday against Jake Shields.

He does look quite nice in a suit

Although no one can rock like Kenny Florian can in the traditional samurai outfit…

I think I’m going to make my middle of the week posts pictures instead of talkin’ your ear off.

Eventually I’ll have my own photos, but for now, I’ll leave you with a photo I snatched off of combatlifestyle.com of the showdown between BJ Penn and Jon Fitch, who I believe was saying if he beats Penn, he gets his power: I’m assuming in a  Highlander-like fashion.

There can only be one, gentlemen.

MMA Fight Photos

When I’m not reading blog on jiu jitsu or how to not look like a clown with the latest makeup, or making Battlestar Galactica ringtones for my phone (you’re darn right I do), I enjoy looking at photography and seeing what amazing images people are able to concoct or capture in the moment.

This classy lady I am linking here is Esther Lin, aka @allelbows on the Twitter. She and her co-hort, E. Casey run this little site,

http://allelbows.com/

“All elbows is Esther Lin and E. Casey Leydon.  Esther’s a photographer, mostly working in and around Mixed Martial Arts, while E. Casey does video work, shooting, editing, and all the rest of that fun stuff.  Esther regularly contributes photos and writing to Fighters Only Magazine, and sometimes contributes to fightlinker.com, sherdog.com, FIGHT!, and others. Esther and Casey both hail from a production background, mostly in documentary and commercials.” –excerpt from the site

She travels around the world and takes some pretty fantastic shots of fighters, both male and female, some posed, some live, and I love them all. Love the composition, love the editing, I just think they are the bee’s knees (or the cat’s meow, whichever makes more sense for you). I would highly suggest if you have some time to take a look at what they have on their page.
