Earworm…Tuesday?

It would make more sense if I posted this on Wednesday for a fantastic alliteration, but whatever, I’m just going for it. For anyone who is not terribly familiar with the term, it’s one of those songs that you can’t help but listen to on repeat.

So here you go- enjoy, everyone!

To Tape or Not to Tape

So, while most of the internet tells you that you should tape your fingers for jiu jitsu, I need to be a contrarian for a moment and say that I’m not totally convinced that everyone needs to do it, myself included. I do tape my pinky toe to its neighbor, but that’s after multiple dislocations (because I’m stubborn) and really to avoid future distractions while training.

I’m sure there are many out there that feel taping their fingers is an absolute life saver, particularly those who have been training for years upon years: your body has suffered tremendous wear and tear and I’m sure tape is a fantastic relief. There are also people out there who say to tape your fingers to avoid future pain or getting knobbly knuckles, and that’s where I don’t totally agree. Full disclosure, I’m also someone who sort of falls more in line with the Hunter S. Thompson quote about the body:

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!”

So really, take that as you will.

Just some thoughts for the day. Have a great day everyone!

Science! Article on 10 Fitness Myths

hey Everyone,

IFLScience has an article on some fitness myths that we’ve all heard about: technically the article is labeled how these fitness myths do more harm than good, but personally I feel like that’s a bit of an exaggeration.

Check it out and have a great day everyone!

The Necessity of Imagination in BJJ

Seems like it wouldn’t have a place in jiu jitsu, right? Having an imagination? Believe it or not there really does have a place in jiu jitsu. You have to be able to imagine what your attempting and the most likely reaction to it. It’s the ability to visualize not just what you are doing now, but the most likely sequence of actions that will follow between you and your partner.

It’s ok if you don’t see that progression now, particularly if you’re at a lower belt. That sort of imagination/visualization comes with time and practice: you start to see the opportunities to act on the techniques you imagined yourself performing. But, as I said, it takes time and practice in order to hone that skill.

Just some thoughts for the day- have a great day everyone!

Happy Friday! Rocky Start Edition

Happy Friday everyone!

Have to admit, this month is off to a little bit of a rocky start- we had a teammate that was assaulted during a robbery and was injured from the ordeal: we were all saddened and admittedly worried about him but he’s recovering and in good spirits, so that’s a relief.

Hopefully you all have been having smoother beginning to the month, or if you’ve also been experiencing a rough start, here’s hoping the next few weeks turn out to be a bit more smooth sailing.

Have a great weekend everyone!
