Jiu Jitsu and Warm Ups- Setting the Tone

This is just something I was thinking about last night: it could be considered arbitrary, but hear me out. How you start class can more often than not set the tone for the kind of class you are going to have. Take your warm ups, for example: there are very few people who enjoy warm ups, but how you get through them will probably have a pretty large impact on how the rest of your class will go, mainly because it’s setting the mindset you have for the class period. Are you half-assing it, just waiting for the next thing to happen, or are you present and attentive during them, really trying your best (regardless of how well or how poorly you do them).

Personally I think whatever mindset you start with in the beginning of the class will dictate how the rest of the class will go. And, your actions will mirror whatever mindset you’re in, which your teammates will see and will react to accordingly. I’m not trying to put anyone on the spot, but personally I would rather drill with the person that appears to be willing, ready and able to put in the work for the class, rather than someone who by all appearances doesn’t want to be there.

So think about that next time you go to class: be mindful of what sort of mindset you are in walking onto the mat, because it may be having an effect on the rest of your time in class.

Just some rambling thoughts I had: have a great day everyone!

Science! Introduction to Peanuts Early Can Prevent Allergy Later In Life

Admittedly, I’m blogging about this because it involves peanuts, and ultimately peanut butter.

There’s a new study out that suggests exposing a child to peanuts early in life can reduce their risk of having an allergy later in life. Hooray!

Check out the article, and have a great day everyone!

Article on Common Mistakes Made with the Upa Sweep

So Grapplearts has an article on the common mistakes people make with the “Upa” sweep, or what I’ve been calling the “bump and roll” sweep since, well, forever.

Anyway, check it out, and have a great day everyone!

UFC 196: All About the Chokes

I’m sure you’ve all heard about it by now, but UFC 196 seemed to be all about jiu jitsu, and in particular rear naked chokes.

Personally, I’m a little town about the outcome of the fights. On one hand (and really overall), I’m thrilled that both fights ended with a submission. Too often I think there is a focus on just the striking end of MMA, and there’s a lack of focus on the grappling side of the sport. Both are tremendously important and I think fighters do themselves a huge disservice when they don’t seriously work on both.

On the other hand, I’m just not a fan of Tate, and let’s be real, I dislike the Diaz brothers. Tate I’ll ignore just because it’s not that I dislike her- I’m not really a huge fan of any female MMA fighter really: however overall I’m thrilled to see they are now co-headlining events- there’s just no one in particular that I really root for.

As for the Diaz brothers- I just feel like their antics sour the whole thing for me. I know a lot of people like the whole swearing, flipping people off, that sort of thing, but I just don’t like it.

Anyway, let me know what you thought of the fights- otherwise, have a great day everyone!

Happy Friday! Urban Dictionary Edition

Happy Friday everyone!

I was perusing Urban Dictionary today (long story) and I found this term/definition that perfect describes most of my mornings:

(n.) The tendency not to start anything until you’ve had a cup of coffee.
This speaks to me on a personal level, you have no idea.
Have a great weekend everyone!

Science! Article on How Space Alters Your Body

So for anyone that has had dreams of rolling in space (or on Mars), here’s an article on how space effects your body.

Check it out, weigh the pros and cons, and let me know if you think you would still be willing to be the first jiu jitsu ambassador for the galaxy. Have a great day everyone!

Best Title for An Article Yet, Courtesy of Fox Sports

“Ronda Rousey’s Coach is Teaching Vince Vaughn How to Grapple”

I think this is tremendously funny: mainly because we live in a world where a woman’s name vanishes the moment a (also relatively successful) man is involved. Don’t get me wrong, Rener Gracie is a pretty well known name in his own right, but the fact that he has to be referred to as “Rhonda Rousey’s [Grappling] Coach” just tickles me in all the right places.

Check out the article, and have a great day everyone!
