Interesting Article on What Wrestlers and Judokas Have that BJJ Players Don’t

Hey guys, There’s an interesting article over at Leo Frincu’s site about what judokas and wrestlers have that jiu jitsu players don’t. I agree with him on the two points he makes, these are two things that I find a lot of jiu jitsu players don’t have, and kind of wish they did (I’ll let you read the article to find out what those points are). My background is in Judo, so I feel more comfortable thinking of it in that context, but anyway, I would encourage jiu jitsu players to learn at least a little judo, or practice some wrestling to round out their game.

Article on Jiu Jitsu and Philanthopy

Hey Everyone,

BJJ Heroes has an article on a philanthropic event hosted by some jiu jitsu people: taking a passion and putting it to a good cause? Sounds good to me.

Check it out, feel free to mention some other jiu jitsu charity events that  you know of (that have either happened in the past or are coming up)- otherwise, have a great day everyone!

Tuesday Jam Out Session

Hey Everyone,

I’m kind of running around like a crazy person at the moment, but while I try to get my ducks in a row, feel free to jam out along with me, because I’ve basically been playing this song on repeat. Also, full disclosure- I haven’t actually watched this video, so it may not be safe for work. Just sayin’.

Have a great day everyone!

Happy Friday! Catch Up and Boozy Seltzer Edition

Happy Friday!

This is a late one: I’m just trying to catch up on things I missed while I was out at Pans: which it’s the busy season for my job, so there’s a lot to catch up on.

In the meantime, I just found an amazing product, boozy seltzer! Check it out, and have a great weekend everyone!

Article on Self Taught Jiu Jitsu Student

So I typically say “Sensei Youtube is not your friend”- he’s more of like that dude at a party that’s cool to hang out with, and you’re always willing to listen to their wild stories but there’s no way you would want them to babysit your dog. Watching techniques on youtube can offer interesting perspectives and can be entertaining, but should not be taken as gospel.

That being said, here’s a story about a kid who made the whole self taught/Youtube thing work for him. There are definitely some valid points: due to the self study it forced him to explore all sorts of games and avenues of jiu jitsu, as opposed to following a particular school’s curriculum. This is also an interesting story because it’s so rare, not because this should become the standard.

Check it out, let me know what you think- otherwise, have a great day everyone!

Article on McGregor and Bravo’s Sort of Offer to Teach Him Jiu Jitsu, With a Catch

So MMA Junkie posted an article about how Conor McGregor has trained a couple of times at Eddie Bravo’s gym. Bravo states he would be willing to train McGregor in jiu jitsu, but with a caveat.

What’s the catch? I read the article, and it sounds like Bravo wants McGregor essentially to drink the 10th Planet Koolaid:

“…But my style isn’t something you can come by for a couple of days and pick up some stuff. My style, you’ve got to make it a lifestyle to make it work. It takes a while.”

Article on Weight Lifting and BJJ

Admittedly, the title of the article “Marcelo Garcia is the Exception, not the Rule” grabbed my attention, mainly because the night before I was just calling Marcelo “the David Copperfield of jiu jitsu”.

The magician, not the Charles Dickens character, just to be clear.

The article actually talks about the benefits of weight lifting, and how people use Marcelo as an example of someone that doesn’t lift weights and is still a jiu jitsu phenom. Personally, I think supplemental weight lifting can be beneficial- I personally use kettlebells for strength and conditioning- but getting stronger will no replace drilling and technique. You can be in the best shape of your life, but that doesn’t really mean anything if you have no idea what you are doing on the mat. So, like I said, supplemental weight training can be beneficial.

Training Camp Weekend

Good morning everyone! So our training camp this past weekend went pretty well: there was a lot of instructional stuff, some training, and lots and lots (and lots) of drilling.

A number of participants came from our affiliates, and we had the opportunity to drill and train with them, which was a fun experience: it’s always interesting to have new bodies to train with.

How was your weekend? Let me know- otherwise, have a great day everyone!
