BJJ: Your Mileage May Vary

I think this is a concept that we all understand, but don’t fully grasp until we’re in the thick of it. It’s something I’ve touched on repeatedly in this blog, and will probably do so because it’s something that so many people talk about, and occasionally need to be reminded of: your mileage may vary. Someone may be speeding ahead of you (at the moment) in terms of progress while you’re plugging along. It happens. Sometimes you feel stuck in the same place for what feels like an eternity. It happens. And sometimes your the one that’s making leaps and bounds in their progress, experiencing that magical moment where everything clicks together.

Again, it happens.

Your mileage may vary depending on a lot of things: how often you attend class, how often you drill, train, compete. All of it plays a part in your jiu jitsu journey. There’s no one, straight path on this trip- it’s full of twists, turns, hills, thorny patches, and the occasional dragon or two that you have to slay.

So keep that in mind next time you are down on yourself and feel like you aren’t progressing: you’re still moving along the same path- the only time you truly stop is if you quit.

Just my thoughts for the day. Have a great day everyone!

Thanks for this post. Really needed to hear this as I just got injured and feel like I’m falling behind while everyone is moving ahead. Great blog, keep going. I read almost every post!
