Happy Friday! Halloween Edition

Happy Halloween everyone!

I have to admit, it’s my favorite holiday- it’s all the fun of the holiday, without the stress of a big dinner, buying gifts, and all that other jazz.

So have a great Halloween everyone, and in the meantime, feel free to enjoy one of my favorite cartoons as a kid:

Science! Scientists Map Out The Awkwardness Of Physical Contact With Others

b1ec1ed0b36eafcd44fe16f8b33ec887

So we all know that one of the biggest barriers when it comes to jiu jitsu is the unwillingness to engage in physical contact with others. Well, scientists apparently have mapped out what is considered the “no go” zones when it comes to touch, based on the relationship with another person.

As the article states, “physical contact is hugely tied to social bonding and social structure”, which is probably why there is such a close knit bond with the people you train with in the gym: not only are you all training together with (usually) the same group over and over again, but this is a full contact sport- you are engaging in TONS of physical contact with someone.

Check it out, and let me know what you think. Otherwise, have a great day everyone!

Technique Execution, in Which Both You and Your Partner Are Impressed

…I mean, I totally meant to do that….

Last night while rolling I pulled out a guard pass that was pretty fancy, and impressed both me and my teammate. It happens occasionally: you do something that you have been drilling, you do it well enough at just the right time leading to both you and your partner to admire for a second how cool that was.

Have you had any of those moments recently- where you or your partner does something so cool that you both stop for a second to say “wow”? Let me know- otherwise, have a great day everyone!

Frankenjitsu

Guys, GUYS…. Halloween is this Saturday!

Anyway, your deep thought for the day: isn’t all of our jiu jitsu a bit of “Frankenjitsu”? You may have a distinctive style, but the moves and techniques you apply are a culmination of different styles and moves learned throughout the years from one, or multiple instructors, but also from reactions to fellow students, lessons learned in competition, so on and so forth? We take these different elements, stitch them together and “bring them to life” so to speak into one cohesive game.

Just my random thought for the day: have a great day everyone!

Science! Those Who Take Their Coffee Black May Be More Likely to Exhibit Psychopathic Tendencies

I’m just mentioning this because it involves one of my favorite things in life, coffee.

Not that this study should be taken as indisputable fact, but a recent study claims to have found that people who take their coffee black are more inclined to exhibit psychopathic tendencies:

“Looking at the taste preferences of 500 people, it was found that those who enjoyed bitter flavors over sweet flavors were more likely to exhibit signs of “Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism, and everyday sadism.” The study, which was published in the journal Appetite, was conducted at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, by psychologists Christina Sagioglou and Tobias Greitemeyer.”

While 500 people may seem like a lot, that’s actually a pretty small sample size. There are a couple other elements to this study that are missing, so I’m really not taking this study seriously. Still, it’s interesting to consider.

Feel free to check it out while I sit here and sip my coffee (with creamer in it), and have a great day everyone!
