Happy Friday! Vaping Edition

Happy Friday everyone!

For people who like to vape (I’m not one of them, personally, but you know- to each his own) I have some bad news for you: according to this study, you are still doing damage to your lungs, with or without nicotine. Not to end the week on a down note, but hey, the more you know.

Check out the article, and have a great weekend everyone!

Article on Shoyoroll and the Knock Off Gi Problem

Attack the Back has a little article about the problems Shoyoroll is currently having with knock off’s of their product infiltrating the BJJ gi market.

I know Shoyoroll isn’t the only brand hit with this problem: a teammate of mine purchased a knockoff Atama without realizing it. It’ll be interesting if someone/ a company addresses this issue head on, and if so, what they will do about it.

Check it out, and have a great day everyone!

BJJ and Mouthguards: Where They Should, and Shouldn’t Go

I’m never against someone wearing a mouthguard: personally I don’t, but once in a while when I’m (accidentally) hit in the face, I start to reconsider this policy….and then the next second I’m right back to rolling.

Speaking of mouthguards though, guys and gals, let’s talk about some places where mouthguards should, and shouldn’t go (thank you Savage Kitsune for inspiring this post). I’m pretty sure I’m overreacting, because I have a thing with mouths (do you know what kind of bacteria lives in there?!)- like really, typically I don’t share food, drink, lip balm, etc. with someone unless I’m related to them, I’ve been dating them, or have been rolling with them a bunch. Anyway, here’s my list-

Where Mouthguards Should Go, Or Be Placed:

In your mouth

In your hand, about to go in your mouth, or about to be placed into, or (the less preferable) on top of a container

Into, or on top of a container that is (preferably) washed on a regular basis- I used to have retainers and even a custom mouthguard for a brief period post-braces, so I know all about that container funk.

Where Mouthguards Should Not Go, Or Be Placed:

Behind Your Ear

Tucked into Your Pants

On the matted floor

On top of a wall mat

On a bench, not in or on a container

On a sink in the locker room- I personally have never seen this happen, but I’m sure it has at some point.

…Really, anywhere else in which theoretically a person will have to pick up something that has your saliva all over it.

Please. Stop. It’s gross.

Any other places you can think you would rather not see a mouthguard? Let me know- otherwise, have a great day!

Female Jiu Jitsu Player You Should Read About: Rosângela “Zanza” Conceição

I just read a quick bio on bjj player Rosângela “Zanza” Conceiçãoand while it’s slightly embarrassing to admit I have never heard the name before, I’m glad to have taken the time out to read her bio on BJJ Heroes. Originally a judo player, this jiu jitsu black belt also went to the Olympics not once but twice, in two different sports (once for judo and once for wrestling).

And if that weren’t awesome enough, she also worked at a hospital in Morumbi teaching children with Down’s Syndrome the fundamentals of judo and overall conditioning.

And finally, you know you’re awesome when a comic book is created for you:

“In 2011 Rosângela Conceição became the subject of a series of comic books named: As Aventuras de Zanza (the Adventures of Zanza). In these comics, Zanza shows the values and morals of martial arts through these illustrations.”

If that’s not cool, I don’t know what is (apparently).

Check out her bio, and have a great day everyone!

Happy Friday! Nostalgic Game/Pinball Edition

Happy Friday everyone!

A friend and I were talking about some nostalgic games and playing pinball- my favorite old school game is Tetris, and the pinball game I remember playing the most was a “Simpsons” themed machine.

Article on 5 Keys to Becoming a Giant Killer

Hey there everyone, I know I’ve been referencing a lot of articles lately and not posting a lot of original content: I’ll get back to rambling soon enough.

In the meantime however, check out this article from Jiu jitsu mag about five tips for beating a larger opponent, or becoming a “giant killer”, and have a great day!

Science! Blood Test Could Detect Traumatic Brain Injury

A recent article in IFLScience reported scientists believe they have developed a blood test to test if someone has a traumatic brain injury, and to what severity. This is great news for MMA fighters, football players, people who are in car accidents- the list goes on and on.

Check it out, and have a great day everyone!

Article on Taping Your Fingers for BJJ

So real confession guys: I don’t tap my fingers, but I probably really should.

Why don’t I? Well, It’s part forgetfulness, part pride (I’m tough! I don’t need to tape my fingers!…Or whatever) and a whole lot of stupidity if we’re being totally honest.

So join me in reading the article on White Belt Jiu Jitsu about why you should tape your fingers, and watch a little instructional video on how to do it. And maybe I’ll get it through my thick skull (one of these days) that this is something I should do on a regular basis.

Have a great day everyone!
