Science! Scientists Discover the Neural Circuity Involved in Hunger

This is definitely interesting: scientists have discovered the neural circuitry involved with hunger, and essentially how to turn off hunger.

According to the article on IFLScience, (which I am now going to poorly summarize) apparently there are a cluster of neurons in the hypothalamus more or less in charge of the regulation of hunger. Scientists then genetically modified mice to a point where they could chemically control these neurons, and through this experiment found they could “switch” hunger on and off for these mice.

The article goes on to state how this can be beneficial to treat people with obesity- I could see grapplers using this. However, I could also see this (very) easily being abused by the same group. It will probably be several years before this information is applied to the public, so I guess we have a while before worrying about that.

Check out the article, and have a great day everyone!

Video of Keenan Cornelius Confronting an Internet Troll

Ok, as much as I say that Keenan Cornelius looks like a serial killer, this is actually pretty funny.

Personally, I’m hoping it’s an homage to “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” (Language in the clip is NSFW, btw)

Take a look at the clips, and have a great day everyone!

Mackenzie Dern Beat Gabi Garcia in Semi Finals Match at Abu Dhabi World Pro 2015

Whaaaaaat…..

Last week during the Abu Dhabi World Pro Tournament, Mackenzie Dern won the semi finals match against Gabi Garcia, which you can watch here:

According to a comment on the video, someone mentioned Gabi there was an issue with the points, saying she deserved two for throwing Dern. I actually watched the video to see what she was talking about, and I can see what she’s talking about- it happens around 3:40-3:45 of the video, at the same time I can see why the ref didn’t call it.

What do you think? Did she deserve the two points, or no? Let me know- otherwise, have a great day!

Happy Friday: Judo Fever Edition

Happy Friday everyone!

There’s apparently an outbreak in our academy: an outbreak of Judo fever.

Teammates are sharing stories of performing uchi-komis (practicing the form of the throw- basically pantomiming the throw repeatedly) at work and other public, non-academy places.

I would be lying if I said that I didn’t have an urge now and again to do the same: however I also sit at work for most of my day so I haven’t had an opportunity to act on said urge.

Has something like this ever happened at your academy? Let me know- otherwise, have a great weekend!

Science! Excessive Intake of Vitamin Supplements May Increase Cancer Risk

You know how they talk about there being too much of a good thing? Apparently vitamin supplements can also fall under that category.

According to IFLScience, an article was published by the University of Colorado Cancer Center in which researchers analyzed data regarding vitamin usage and cancer, and found that those who took more than was necessary actually increased their risk of developing cancer. according to the post:

“We are not sure why this is happening at the molecular level,” explains researcher Tim Byers, “but evidence shows that people who take more dietary supplements than needed tend to have a higher risk of developing cancer.”

Ruh roh. The post goes on to assure us all not to panic, that these vitamins in the correct dosage should be beneficial for everyone.

Check it out, and have a great day everyone!

Ralek Gracie and Foot in Mouth Syndrome, Caught on Tape

Jiu Jiu wrote an article on her blog about how Ralek Gracie basically spent 15 minutes putting his foot in his mouth.

First, I applaud her for taking the time to watch the whole damn thing. I absolutely hate the straight on, close up shots the organization seems to be so fond of when it comes to interview footage- I don’t know what it is, it just really gets on my nerves.

Anyway, apparently he spends the time talking about how his comment was not sexist, but rather out of context, and all other sorts of things I have no interest in hearing at the moment (sorry, not sorry).

Check it out, let me know what you think, and have a great day everyone!
