BJJ Tournament Prep: The “Danger Zone” Before a Tournament

It’s what I (internally) call the time right before a tournament when you are the most likely to get injured- you know, just before I remember the 80’s song that inevitably plays in my head shortly after. Minor or major, doesn’t matter, we’ve all been there at one time or another and it’s a huge pain in the butt.

It’s usually about 2 weeks out from a tournament, I have found. Emotions are running high, everyone is getting antsy and ready to compete- you can feel a change in the “rhythm of the room” as our coach says, and this can sometimes lead to mishaps: an armbar that someone goes after a little too hard, someone escapes a bad position a little too enthusiastically and ends up hitting their partner, or themselves (hey, it happens), the list goes on and on.

So how do we avoid this “danger zone”? Personally, I just keep aware and try to stay mindful while training: just keep moving to get a sweat on, but not get too crazy. The name of the game so close to tournament time is to train smart, and keep yourself as healthy as possible before you compete.

Have you noticed this “danger zone” period right before a tournament? Do you do change anything in your training habits, etc specifically around this time to avoid getting injured? Let me know!
