Confessions of a Jiu Jitsu Addict and Maintaining a Balance

Guys, I think I have a straight up addiction.

Not that this is shocking news to anyone, but it surprised me a little. This morning instead of thinking of ways to relax after my tournament and cut back on the training, I’m thinking of ways to train more- granted, it’s in the spirit of helping a student who mentioned some frustration at not having the time to train more and I just have a natural desire to help people, especially those I am close to and care about…but still.

I think the primary reason this concerns me is that I also don’t want to burn myself out: I don’t want to turn jiu jitsu into a chore and I’m the type of person that yes, I enjoy jiu jitsu, but I do have other interests I enjoy and don’t want to feel later like I am denying myself or missing out on the opportunity to  pursue those because of training without a specific goal or event in mind, like a tournament. Life is all about balance, and I just want to make sure I am maintaining a reasonable, healthy distribution in all areas of my life.

::Shrug:: I haven’t talked to the teammate yet about this idea, so I’ll probably stew on it a little more before offering to put in the time.

Also, posts are going to be a little short/sub-par quality over the next few days (what? I’m just being honest) due to focusing on the aforementioned tournament. So, sorry? It’ll get better- or at least back to the standard somewhat interesting/kind of amusing posts come Monday.

Have a great day everyone!

  1. Balance is important. Remember, the reason you got into Jiu Jitsu is because it is fun as hell, not a chore. Good luck at the tournament.
