Depressing News in the BJJ Community

Sorry for the lack of posting, but turns out my stomach issues are a stomach virus I has to call out of work for…yay :/

So, pardon my French, but I was looking through my facebook feed, and what sort of fuckery is this?

Two Lloyd Irvin students raped one of their female teammates on New Years….That just blows my mind.

This is unacceptable behavior, jiu jitsu or not, and it just saddens me that this happened.

Check out the story over on Georgette’s blog

  1. Jaime

I don’t get what all the sturm and drang amongst jiu-jiteiros is all about. What does the rape incident have to do with jiu-jitsu? These are two individuals who raped a woman. Yes, they knew her, but all that does is provide evidence in regards to crimes being committed between people who know each other.

It’s absolutely horrible that it happened. Here she was, trusting these guys to get her home safely, and they betray that trust in the most inhuman way. But this has NOTHING to do with jiu-jitsu.

  2. I agree with you Jaime. But, as martial artists, we often expect more of our fellow practitioners than we would of “normal” people. So while rape is horrible no matter who does it, I think many believe that those who practice BJJ should have a high moral code because of it. Sadly, they do not necessarily go hand in hand.

  3. Along the lines of what Jennifer said, I think a lot of male martial artists see their skills as a responsibility. A martial artist picking a bar fight for example is frowned upon. Obviously assaulting a woman goes in that category. For women, martial arts, and especially BJJ can be empowering tools, and gyms places to build confidence, and self-defense skill. The irony of a woman being attacked from inside that system is extra heart-breaking. I think a lot of us are sad when we think about how much we get out of our training and communities, and how that got undermined and destroyed for someone in addition to her being assaulted. Maybe some BJJ practitioners see it as a personal blow to their art.

  4. Yea, it’s pretty sad. I read it and was really taken back. What made me even more upset was the fact these werent random guys. These were friends and they took advantage of the friendship/bond they had built inside the gym to fulfill their sick urges. Scumbags.

I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the case of Cameron Earle, but he was another skill Bjj player and unfortunately rapist.
