During the Pan Championships there were cameras everywhere, and the company Budo Video streamed matches to their site for people to watch.
This is great, and a great step forward for the IBJJF. There is a small problem, however: according to someone on the Budo Video website forum, only certain matches were recorded during that stream- the problem lies in the fact that many spectators were told to stop taping their teammates’ matches, because they would be recorded and available through Budo Video.
I understand the tournament in question was four days long. I understand there were also 12 mats in the venue, which means a lot of footage that would have to be stored and made available somewhere. And I even understand the rule of no recording for say, the big name black belt fights.
But I do also believe there needs to be some sort of compromise, especially for lower ranks who would like to record their matches. It’s a moment of pride, to compete at an IBJJF tournament, and helpful to see your mistakes on camera, win or lose.
I imagine this is still a work in progress between Budo Video and the IBJJF, but I hope a resolution is created soon.
